
“Fincantieri Unveils Qatar’s Maiden Corvette: A New Era at Sea”
In the presence of Senator Stefania Pucciarelli, the Undersecretary of State for Defence, the handover of the corvette “Al Zubarah,” the inaugural vessel of a series of four ships commissioned from Fincantieri by the Qatari Ministry of Defence within the national naval procurement initiative, occurred today at the Muggiano (La Spezia) shipyard.
The event, conducted in a limited format and in strict adherence to health and safety protocols, was graced by Three-star General Salem Hamad Al Nabit, Chief of Staff of the Qatar Armed Forces, Staff Major General (Sea) Abdullah Hassan Al-Sulaiti, Commander of the Qatar Emiri Naval Forces, Vice Admiral Aurelio De Carolis, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy, and Giuseppe Giordo, General Manager of Naval Vessels Division at Fincantieri.
The Al Zubarah class corvettes, designed in accordance with RINAMIL regulations, are set to be exceptionally versatile and adept at undertaking a variety of operations, from surveillance with maritime rescue capabilities to serving as combat vessels. They will measure approximately 107 meters in length, 14.70 meters in width, and feature a combined diesel and diesel engine system (CODAD), achieving a maximum velocity of 28 knots. Each unit will host up to 112 personnel.
Additionally, these corvettes will be equipped to deploy high-speed watercraft such as RHIBs (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats) via side cranes or a ramp located at the rear. The flight deck and hangar are designed to accommodate one NH90 helicopter.
