Fincantieri Unveils Qatar’s Next-Gen Corvette: A Bold New Maritime Adventure!

The official debut of the corvette “Damsah” alongside the keel setting of “Sumaysimah”, the second and fourth vessels of the Al Zubarah Class Corvette commissioned from Fincantieri by the Qatari Ministry of Defence under the national naval procurement initiative with deliveries scheduled for 2022 and 2023, occurred today at the Muggiano (La Spezia) shipyard.

The event, conducted in a limited capacity and strictly adhering to health guidelines, was honored by the presence of Major General Mubarak Mohammed A.K. Al-Khayarin, Deputy Chief of Staff for Administration and Logistics Affairs for Qatar Armed Forces, Rear Admiral Giorgio Lazio, Italian Navy Maritime Commander – Area North, and Giuseppe Giordo, General Manager of the Naval Vessel Division of Fincantieri.

The vessels, crafted in alignment with the RINAMIL standards, will exhibit remarkable adaptability and the ability to execute various missions, ranging from surveillance with maritime rescue capabilities to combat operations. They will measure approximately 107 meters in length, 14.70 meters in width, and will be outfitted with a combined diesel and diesel propulsion system (CODAD), achieving a peak velocity of 28 knots. The corvettes will accommodate up to 112 personnel onboard.

Moreover, the corvettes will be equipped to deploy high-speed crafts such as RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat) via side-mounted cranes or a launching ramp located at the aft. The flight deck and hangar are tailored to accommodate one NH90 helicopter.
