
Fincantieri Unveils Qatar’s Latest Naval Marvel: The Third Corvette “Al Khor” Set Sail!
The handover of the corvette “Al Khor”, the third vessel of the four-ship Al Zubarah-class commissioned from Fincantieri by the Qatari Ministry of Defence as part of the national maritime procurement initiative, occurred today at the Muggiano (La Spezia) shipyard.
The event was graced by Staff Major General Hilal Al Muhannadi, the Defense Attaché of the State of Qatar in Rome, Major General Hassan Rashid Al Ali, Head of Qatar Air Force Projects, Brigadier General Abdulla Al Mazroey, Deputy Chief of the Qatar Navy and Commander of the Flottilla, Mr. Ahmed Mohammed AlShebani, representative from the Qatar Embassy, Rear Admiral Giuseppe Scorsone, Director of the Maritime Military Arsenal of La Spezia, along with Andrea Viero, Senior Vice President of Market Development and Innovation in the Naval Vessels Division of Fincantieri.
The Al Zubarah-class corvettes, meticulously designed in adherence to RINAMIL standards, will exhibit remarkable adaptability, suitable for a variety of missions ranging from surveillance and sea rescue operations to engagement as combat vessels. They will measure approximately 107 meters in length and 14.70 meters in width, featuring a combined diesel propulsion system (CODAD) with a peak velocity of 28 knots. Each unit will accommodate up to 112 personnel onboard.
Additionally, the corvettes are designed to deploy high-speed boats like RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat) utilizing side cranes or a retrieval ramp located at the aft. The spacious flight deck and hangar are configured to accommodate one NH90 helicopter.
