Inaugural Qatari Naval Patrol Ship Sets Sail!

The ceremonial launch of the pioneering patrol vessel (OPV – Offshore Patrol Vessel) “Musherib,” commissioned to Fincantieri by the Qatari Ministry of Defence as part of the national naval procurement initiative, occurred today at the Muggiano (La Spezia) facility. This event was graced by the presence of the Italian Minister of Defence Lorenzo Guerini, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of Qatar Khalid bin Mohammed Al Attiyah, the Chief of Staff of the Qatari Emiri Navy Maj. Gen. Abdulla Hassan Al Suleiti, and the Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, welcomed by the Chairman and CEO of Fincantieri, Giampiero Massolo and Giuseppe Bono.

This launch, conducted privately and in full accordance with current health guidelines, followed the initial steel cutting of the vessel “Sumaysimah,” which is the fourth corvette of the same initiative.

The “Musherib” OPV vessel, scheduled for delivery in 2022 and designed in compliance with the RINAMIL standards for Fast Patrol Vessels (FPV), will serve as a versatile ship capable of fulfilling multiple roles, ranging from surveillance to combat operations.

Measuring approximately 63 meters in length and 9.2 meters in width, it boasts a maximum velocity of 30 knots and can accommodate a crew of up to 38 members. The propulsion mechanism features four variable pitch propellers, two on the starboard side and two on the port side, each paired with its own diesel engine.

Additionally, the vessel is designed to deploy a RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat) via a crane located at the aft section.

The contract, estimated at nearly 4 billion euros for Fincantieri, includes the delivery of seven naval vessels, which comprise four corvettes, one landing platform dock (LPD), and two offshore patrol vessels (OPV), along with support services in Qatar for an additional 10 years following the ships’ delivery.

All vessels will be entirely constructed in the Group’s Italian shipyards, ensuring ongoing operations until 2024 and significantly benefiting the key Italian defense industry players.

Fincantieri stands as one of the world’s largest shipbuilding conglomerates and is the leader in diversification and innovation. With a rich history spanning over 230 years and more than 7,000 vessels constructed, Fincantieri retains its headquarters and all distinctive engineering and production capabilities in Italy. The Group currently operates 18 shipyards across four continents, employing nearly 20,000 individuals, and is recognized as the leading Western shipbuilder.
