General Dynamics NASSCO has initiated the fabrication of a fifth vessel for the U.S. Navy’s Expeditionary Transfer Dock (ESD)/Expeditionary Sea Base (ESB) initiative.

Engineered to provide enhanced versatility and capability for maritime-to-land operations, the latest ESB will feature a 52,000 square-foot flight deck, fuel and equipment storage, maintenance areas, ammunition holds, mission planning rooms, and quarters for up to 250 individuals. Acting as a ‘pier at sea,’ the 784-foot-long vessel is also constructed to accommodate MH-53 and MH-60 rotorcraft as well as MV-22 tilt-rotor aircraft.

The vessel, named ESB 5, marks the fifth addition to a contract between NASSCO and the U.S. Navy, which initially called for two Expeditionary Transfer Docks: USNS Montford Point (T-ESD 1) and USNS John Glenn (T-ESD 2).

The initial two vessels, previously classified as Mobile Landing Platforms (MLPs), were developed and built by NASSCO to facilitate vehicle staging and transfers alongside the movement of LCAC craft. In 2012, a third vessel, USNS Lewis B. Puller (T-ESB 3), was appended to the contract and modified into an ESB, formerly referred to as an MLP Afloat Forward Staging Base, to assist in a broad spectrum of military engagements. All three vessels have been handed over to the U.S. Navy, and in October 2015, NASSCO commenced work on ESB 4, USNS Hershel “Woody” Williams.

NASSCO represents the largest shipyard on the western seaboard of the United States, specializing in design, construction, and repair services for ocean-going vessels. Over the past ten years, NASSCO has delivered more than 30 maritime vessels to governmental and commercial clients, including the world’s pioneering LNG-powered container ships and numerous other lead vessels.
