Greece and France Boost Strategic Ties: Greece Unveils Purchase of Three Advanced Frigates
This Tuesday, September 28, in the presence of the Minister of the Armed Forces, the Greek Defense Minister formalized, with the CEOs of the French organizations Naval Group and MBDA, a “Memorandum of Understanding” that outlines the procurement by the Hellenic Navy of 3 Defence and Intervention Frigates produced in France, along with a fourth optional vessel, as well as their upkeep and associated weaponry.
Following the procurement of 18 Rafale jets by Greece, and the declared intention to place an order for 6 additional units (totaling 24 Rafale), this decision falls within the broader context of a strategic alliance established between the two nations, revealed today by the President of the French Republic and the Greek Prime Minister.
The Minister of the Armed Forces, Florence Parly, stated: “This is a landmark declaration, affirming the extraordinary defense collaboration between our two nations. The fabrication of this advanced equipment by France contributes to an ambitious European defense initiative. Our navies will jointly be outfitted with these top-notch, contemporary, and potent combat vessels.”
The Defence and Intervention Frigates, cutting-edge French frigates, are set to equip the French Navy starting in 2024 and the Hellenic Navy in 2025.
This decision will enable both Navies to enjoy exceptional interoperability; it also clears the path for strengthened collaboration, particularly offering the prospect of significant synergies in support operations.
Greece’s selection signifies a commitment to robust European sovereignty and further illustrates the vitality of our bilateral partnership. It demonstrates that the French naval sector can present an offering that meets world-class standards to our allies.
This latest export achievement is part of a proactive strategy by the Minister of the Armed Forces aimed at enhancing our European alliances. Since 2017, France has seen unprecedented arms exports to European nations: in recent years, Europe has emerged as the primary export market for French defense supplies.
A driving force for our economy and the dynamism of our regions, our defense industry (“Defence Technological Industrial Base”, BITD) currently employs 200,000 individuals in France. Between 2017 and 2020, 36,320 jobs were established within the French defense sector.
