Fincantieri Unveils the Mighty “Francesco Morosini”: The Next-Gen Offshore Patrol Vessel Sets Sail!

Today, the handover of the Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Vessel (PPA – Pattugliatore Polivalente d’Altura) “Francesco Morosini” occurred at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Muggiano (La Spezia). This is the second of a total of seven ships scheduled for construction at the Integrated Shipyard of Riva Trigoso and Muggiano, with deliveries anticipated through 2026.

The PPAs form a crucial part of the modernization strategy for the operational capabilities of the Italian Navy fleet, which was ratified by both the Government and Parliament, initiating in May 2015 under the “Naval Act” framed by OCCAR (Organisation Conjointe de Cooperation sur l’Armement), the international body dedicated to arms cooperation.

The ceremony was graced by notable attendees, including the Chief of the Italian Navy, Admiral OF-9 Enrico Credendino, along with Dario Deste, General Manager of the Naval Vessels Division at Fincantieri.

Ship Specifications: PPA – Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Vessel

This multipurpose offshore patrol vessel is a versatile asset boasting the capability to perform a variety of missions, from maritime surveillance with search and rescue capabilities to Civil Protection operations. In its most advanced iteration, it serves as a frontline combat vessel. The seven ships within this initiative will exhibit various configurations of combat systems: beginning with a “soft” variant designed for patrol duties, enhanced for self-defense capabilities, progressing to a “fully equipped” version that offers comprehensive defensive measures. The patrol vessel is also adept at deploying high-speed crafts like RHIBs (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats) up to 11 meters long via lateral cranes or a recovery ramp situated at the extreme stern.

Overall length of 143 meters, with speeds reaching up to 32 knots, subject to vessel configuration and operational circumstances. The ship is designed to accommodate approximately 135 crew members and has lodging facilities for up to 181 personnel. The propulsion system features a combined diesel and gas turbine setup, incorporating electric motors for lower speed operations and possesses the capability to deliver potable water to coastal zones.
