Kongsberg Secures Innovative Deal for Next-Gen Supersonic Strike Missile (3SM)

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG) has today finalized a contract with the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) for the preliminary development stage of the innovative German-Norwegian missile system, the Supersonic Strike Missile (3SM).

The Supersonic Strike Missile represents an advanced missile system poised for implementation on future vessels starting in 2035. KONGSBERG and Norway boast a rich history in advancing sophisticated missile systems, and the emerging system will aid in preserving and enhancing the current expertise within missile technology. The financial value of the initial development phase is projected to reach up to 1.5 billion NOK.

“The 3SM missile initiative exemplifies how multinational and industrial partnerships bolster the defense capabilities of Norway, Germany, and allied nations. Close collaboration among industry leaders, governmental bodies, and academic institutions lays the groundwork for innovation, job creation, and fortifies our standing as a premier missile manufacturer globally,” asserts Eirik Lie, President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.

KONGSBERG has been designated as the primary contractor and industry leader, with substantial contributions from German and Norwegian subcontractors. KONGSBERG, Diehl Defence, and MBDA Deutschland have united in a partnership to execute the development. The Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) and Nammo will also play vital roles in the project.

“Norway has a significant legacy in developing cutting-edge missile systems, making it essential to uphold and further enhance the existing expertise and stature that Norway holds in missile technology. Establishing Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace as a new partner and industry leader is an essential milestone in crafting a formidable new weapon system for engaging maritime targets. KONGSBERG brings extensive and invaluable experience in this domain,” states Gro Jære, Director of the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA).

The latest supersonic missile is a joint German-Norwegian development venture, with Norway taking the lead. This anti-ship missile will play a crucial role in ensuring sovereignty and territorial integrity by boosting the Armed Forces’ deterrence capability and enhancing abilities to target long-range threats. The missile system is designed for deployment on both Norwegian and German naval assets, with potential applications for other NATO allies and partners.

KONGSBERG and Norway pioneered the Naval Strike Missile (NSM) in the 2000s. This missile system is now utilized by 13 nations, including Norway, Germany, and the USA. Upon deployment of the 3SM in the mid-2030s, it will serve as an effective supplement to the NSM.
