M-345 HET: A New Era in Pilot Training
The M-345 HET (High Efficiency Trainer) has successfully completed its inaugural flight at Venegono Superiore Airport in Varese, Italy. Pilots Quirino Bucci and Giacomo Iannelli were at the controls, marking a significant milestone in advanced training aircraft development.
Quirino Bucci, the Trainer Project Test Pilot, remarked, “The aircraft excelled during its flight, meeting all design parameters and expectations. Its engine, in particular, demonstrated an outstanding response to power changes, which is crucial for aerobatic operations. The on-board systems have also been tested, and I’m thrilled with the exceptional avionics integration and user-friendly interface.”
Lucio Valerio Cioffi, Managing Director of Leonardo Aircraft Division, stated, “I’m exceptionally pleased with our progress and the quick turnaround for such impressive results. The M-345, already gaining traction among numerous air forces globally, promises to significantly enhance training effectiveness while reducing operational costs. This aircraft uniquely combines the performance of a jet with the affordability of a high-power turboprop trainer.”
Italian Air Force’s Commitment to the M-345
The Italian Air Force, as the launch customer, has a demand for up to 45 M-345 units (designated T-345A by ITAF). This new aircraft aims to replace 137 MB-339s that have served since 1982 and will serve as the new platform for the Italian Air Force’s aerobatic team. An initial order for five aircraft has already been placed, with the first expected for delivery in early 2020.
The M-345 will seamlessly integrate with the M-346s utilized during the advanced training phases of Italian Air Force pilots. Through the International Flight Training School, the Air Force aims to enhance its training capabilities and services to clients, propelling its growth and international outreach in pilot training.
