Oshkosh Defense Launches Groundbreaking Whisper-Quiet Hybrid Electric JLTV
Oshkosh Defense, a fully-owned branch of Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE: OSK), has introduced the groundbreaking silent drive hybrid-electric Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV), known as the eJLTV.
The eJLTV delivers the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps with equivalent levels of performance and safeguarding as the standard JLTV, augmented by silent drive capabilities, prolonged silent observation, improved fuel efficiency, and enhanced exportable power, allowing its use in both combat and reconnaissance operations.

The eJLTV recharges its battery during operation, completely rejuvenating the lithium-ion battery within half an hour. This innovation negates the necessity for an external charging infrastructure, a primary obstacle to the broad electrification of the tactical wheeled vehicle fleet.
“For numerous years, we’ve been developing, testing, and advancing hybrid-electric versions of our heavy and medium-duty tactical wheeled vehicles,” stated John Bryant, Executive Vice President for Oshkosh Corporation and President of Oshkosh Defense. “Now, with the launch of the eJLTV, we’re presenting our military clients with a cost-effective solution to electrify their light tactical wheeled vehicle fleet without sacrificing off-road agility or the exceptional protection essential in combat scenarios.”
This year, the U.S. Army intends to recompete the JLTV initiative and issue a subsequent production contract in September 2022. This follow-on agreement, estimated at $6.5 Billion, comprises an additional 15,468 vehicles and extends over five order years with five optional years, prolonging production through FY32.
“Although the U.S. Army has yet to request a hybrid-electric JLTV as part of the JLTV recompete, the eJLTV demonstrates that Oshkosh Defense possesses the team and technical expertise to manufacture this highly capable vehicle today,” Bryant concluded.
Information on the eJLTV:
- Retains the performance and protection of the established Oshkosh Defense JLTV
- Enhances fuel efficiency by over 20%
- Delivers a battery capacity of 30kWh with potential for expansion
- Removes the requirement for a towed generator by providing export power capacity up to 115kW
Oshkosh Defense and its parent entity, Oshkosh Corporation, boast a rich legacy in electrification and are advancing the frontiers of innovation for their customers. An excellent example is the Oshkosh Defense diesel-electric Light Combat Tactical Vehicle (LCTV), from which the Oshkosh JLTV is derived. The LCTV represents the first military vehicle to successfully complete the punishing SCORE Baja 1000 off-road race. Moreover, Oshkosh Defense secured the contract to develop and manufacture the U.S. Postal Service’s Next Generation Delivery Vehicle (NGDV), which anticipates delivering between 50,000 and 165,000 vehicles over a decade and will comprise both zero-emission battery electric vehicles (BEV) and fuel-efficient low-emission internal combustion vehicles (ICE), enhancing the sustainability of the USPS fleet.
