RTX Unveils Next-Gen LTAMDS Radar Following Key U.S. Army Breakthrough

RTX has officially moved its Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS) into production after attaining the U.S. Army’s Milestone C approval, marking a crucial advancement in bolstering integrated air and missile defense capabilities.

Raytheon, a division of RTX, engineered LTAMDS to succeed the existing Patriot radar, introducing a state-of-the-art system that provides comprehensive 360-degree threat detection. The system has successfully completed eight intricate flight tests and showcased its effectiveness in authentic threat environments.

“This is a remarkable milestone… shifting from prototype to production and deployment at an expedited rate,” stated Tom Laliberty, President of Raytheon Land and Air Defense Systems.

Raytheon has supplied the first six LTAMDS radars to the U.S. Army as part of a contract established in 2019. Current production is set at eight radars per year, with intentions to expand to 12 annually in order to satisfy growing demand. The forthcoming deliveries, seven and eight, are anticipated later this year.

Poland stands as the initial international client to incorporate LTAMDS into its defense framework. RTX has confirmed that 12 additional nations have sought pricing and availability details for potential procurement.

The system is crafted to support both domestic defense and expeditionary operations and was expedited through U.S. Congress’ Middle-Tier Acquisition authority—an initiative that significantly reduced development durations.
