Raytheon Intelligence & Space Reinforces U.S. Navy’s Fight Against Narco-Terrorism

Secures $146 million agreement to manage and sustain long-range surveillance radar network.

Raytheon Intelligence & Space, a division of Raytheon Technologies (NYSE: RTX), will persist in managing and maintaining the U.S. government’s Relocatable Over-the-Horizon Radar (ROTHR) system under a $146 million, five-year agreement.

Initially designed to monitor long-distance targets for aviation and maritime activities, ROTHR is currently the chief detection system for border protection and drug trafficking enforcement under the Joint Interagency Task Force South. In 2020 alone, ROTHR played a crucial role in the confiscation of 26 metric tons of cocaine from traffickers attempting to enter U.S. soil.

“Raytheon Technologies’ ROTHR systems have bolstered U.S. Navy operations for over three decades,” remarked John DeSimone, vice president of Cybersecurity, Training and Services for RI&S. “We will continue to collaborate closely with the Navy and JIATF South to enhance our national security.”

The contract encompasses operations and maintenance across six ROTHR sites in Puerto Rico, Texas, and Virginia. Each radar station covers more than 2.5 million square miles, resulting in remarkably low operational expenses.
