Raytheon Company has secured an initial agreement to manufacture Naval Strike Missile (NSM) launchers at its production location. This arrangement initiates U.S. fabrication of the Norwegian-engineered weapon system.
Kongsberg Defence Systems granted the initial agreement for qualification units. This award follows a July declaration that Raytheon will fabricate NSM launchers in the United States. Additionally, the organization plans to conduct final assembly, integration, and testing of the Naval Strike Missile at Raytheon’s Tucson, Arizona site.
“Constructing NSM launchers at our Louisville location is a remarkable expansion of our enduring collaboration with Kongsberg,” stated Dr. Taylor W. Lawrence, president of Raytheon Missile Systems. “This agreement will allow us to generate employment while furnishing our Norwegian partners with top-tier launchers.”
Raytheon already manufactures Close-in Weapon Systems such as Phalanx, SeaRAM, and Rolling Airframe Missile launchers at its Louisville facility.
“This agreement represents a crucial next step in our long-term alliance with Raytheon, marking the historic first production contract for NSM within the U.S.,” remarked Harald Ånnestad, president of Kongsberg Defence Systems. “Kongsberg is dedicated to advancing the production and support of NSM in the U.S. for the foreseeable future. This initiative fosters high-tech job creation and ensures U.S. sustainability of NSM,”
With a range exceeding 100 nautical miles, NSM is a long-range, anti-ship missile that delivers exceptional strike capability against both land and maritime targets. Raytheon and Kongsberg assert that NSM is an optimal solution for naval forces worldwide and the premier over-the-horizon missile for the U.S. Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship.
Furthermore, the companies are collaborating on the development of the Joint Strike Missile and National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems, commonly referred to as NASAMS.
