Rheinmetall and MBDA Deutschland have established a partnership in the high-energy laser systems field. The two enterprises plan to design, integrate, and evaluate a laser prototype for the German Navy’s K130 corvette.
With the capability to engage targets at light speed with exceptional accuracy and minimal collateral impact, lasers represent a revolutionary advancement in military technology. For the very first time, this capacity is set to be examined under nearly operational conditions using a prototype mounted aboard a German corvette. The specifics and distribution of tasks between the two organizations will be finalized once the performance criteria are provided by the Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology, and Support, Germany’s defense procurement agency.
In anticipation of the collaborative effort, Peter Heilmeier, Head of Sales and Business Development at MBDA Deutschland GmbH, emphasizes that “the partnership between Rheinmetall and MBDA will significantly benefit the Bundeswehr. Both firms will utilize their unique strengths to ensure this German Navy initiative achieves remarkable success.”
Werner Krämer, Managing Director of Rheinmetall Waffe Munition GmbH, encapsulates the initiative by stating: “We will closely collaborate to harness the military capabilities of laser technology for the Bundeswehr, enhancing its operational readiness and effectiveness in combat. Compared to other nations, our two firms possess unparalleled competencies. Lasers present new tactical opportunities on land, at sea, and in the aerospace domain. Together with the German Navy, we aim to advance this innovative technology.”
