Fincantieri Unveils Groundbreaking Patrol Vessel in Historic Collaboration with Qatar
The steel-cutting ceremony for the initial patrol vessel (OPV – Offshore Patrol Vessel) commissioned by the Qatari Ministry of Defence under the national naval procurement initiative took place today at the Muggiano (La Spezia) shipyard.
In acquiring this prestigious contract, Fincantieri has excelled over its competitors due to a project recognized as the most advanced and innovative, supported by significant expertise in building high-tech vessels.
The contract, estimated at about 4 billion euros for Fincantieri, outlines the delivery of seven surface vessels, which include four corvettes, one amphibious vessel (LPD – Landing Platform Dock), and two patrol vessels (OPV – Offshore Patrol Vessel), along with support services in Qatar for an additional 10 years after the delivery of the vessels. All units will be carefully constructed in Fincantieri’s Italian shipyards.
The first patrol vessel, for which the initial steel has been cut today, is designed in line with RINAMIL Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) standards and will be a versatile type of ship, capable of performing a range of tasks from surveillance to operational combat. It measures approximately 63 meters in length and 9.2 meters in width, achieving a maximum speed of 30 knots and will be equipped to accommodate 38 crew members onboard.
The propulsion system includes four variable-pitch propellers, with two located on the starboard side and two on the port side, each paired with a diesel propulsion engine.
Furthermore, the vessel will be equipped to launch a RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat) using a crane positioned at the stern.
