Saab Secures Additional Contract for A26 Submarine Development
The latest order will enhance the submarine’s arsenal and stealth abilities.
Sweden’s Defence Material Administration has granted Saab an additional contract valued at $600 million (SEK 5.2 billion) to advance the development, manufacturing, and broaden the capabilities of the two A26 Blekinge-class submarines.
Saab’s president and CEO, Micael Johansson, stated, ‘Saab is currently building the globe’s most cutting-edge conventional submarine.
‘The forthcoming enhancements to the A26 will provide a significant advantage in terms of weapon systems and stealth technology, among other enhancements.’
Sweden commissioned the two new Blekinge-class submarines in June 2015. The delivery of these state-of-the-art submarines is anticipated in 2027 and 2028.
The modern submarines will have a displacement of 2,400 tons with a length of 63 meters. A diesel-electric propulsion system will achieve a peak speed of approximately 20 knots and a range of 6,500 miles.
