Saab Secures Contract to Upgrade German Navy’s F123 Frigates
Saab has finalized an agreement with the German Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology, and In-Service Support (BAAINBw), receiving a mandate to supply and integrate advanced naval radars and fire control systems for the German Navy’s Brandenburg-Class Frigates (F123). This agreement encompasses a novel combat management framework designed to completely revamp the existing system utilized on the F123, enabling a low-risk incorporation of the new naval radar and fire control enhancements. The estimated contract value is roughly 4.6 billion SEK. Deliveries and additional services are scheduled between 2021 and 2030.
Saab will act as the primary contractor, partnering with the German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen for shipbuilding endeavors, while the German entity ESG will oversee logistical operations.
“We are honored that Germany has chosen Saab as the combat system supplier and integrator for the frigates slated for modernization. We anticipate the opportunity to enhance Germany’s domestic combat system integration capabilities, creating substantial value and service delivery within Germany. This agreement will further solidify our partnership with Germany for numerous years ahead,” states Micael Johansson, Saab’s President and CEO.
The agreement includes the provision and integration of Saab’s 9LV Combat Management System, Sea Giraffe 4A and Sea Giraffe 1X radars, and the Ceros 200 fire control system, alongside third-party systems, featuring IFF capability. Furthermore, it offers a comprehensive, performance-based logistics package to bolster the frigates’ operational effectiveness.
Saab will execute the work in Germany, Sweden, and Australia.
