Safran Unveils Geonyx™: The Next-Gen Inertial Navigation Innovation for Rapid Rescue and Amphibious Operations

Daniel Linares / Safran

At the SOFINS 2021 Special Forces exhibition, Safran Electronics & Defense is unveiling the innovative Geonyx M inertial navigation and pointing system. This addition complements the Geonyx series for terrestrial vehicles, alongside the Argonyx line for large surface vessels and Black-Onyx for submarines. Constructed on the Crystal hemispherical resonator gyro (HRG), Geonyx M integrates Safran’s advanced inertial navigation technologies to improve efficiency and integration, while minimizing the overall ownership cost.

Geonyx M is a compact device that operates independently of external sensors and exhibits remarkable shock resistance without needing an external suspension mechanism. It is primarily tailored for naval platforms like fast rescue boats and landing craft, in addition to amphibious vehicles. The system ascertains the vessel’s orientation and location for navigation, positioning, and targeting. Leveraging insights from the FUSCOL@B* lab and operational feedback, Geonyx M is a flexible and high-efficiency system, making it ideally suited for utilization by Special Forces, frequently deployed in diverse environments—even in scenarios where satellite navigation signals are disrupted or unavailable.

Safran Electronics & Defense relies on the straightforwardness and maturity of HRG technology to create a broad array of compact and exceptionally reliable inertial navigation systems, providing performance levels customized for various applications. These systems are utilized in both civilian and military sectors across all environments: air, sea, land, and space. For example, over 1,000 HRG-based inertial systems for vessels have been manufactured since their launch in 2012. The Geonyx inertial system for land applications has already received more than 300 orders and has been implemented by 30 clients worldwide since its introduction in 2018.
