Safran’s Paseo XLR Optics Selected for Brazil’s Cutting-Edge Frigates

Safran’s Paseo XLR (eXtra Long Range) optronic (electro-optical) sight has been selected by the Aguas Azuis consortium for Brazil’s upcoming Tamandaré class frigates. The Brazilian navy is set to receive four frigates, each weighing 3,500 metric tons, starting in 2026. Each vessel will be equipped with two PASEO XLR sights.

The Paseo XLR integrates components from Safran’s airborne Euroflir optronic systems, notably high-definition sensors linked with a multispectral telescope, allowing it to spot threats on the horizon. The Paseo XLR is proficient in identifying small vessels that are often challenging to detect via traditional radar systems as they skim near the water surface and are frequently constructed from composite materials that do not reflect radar waves. These attributes render the Paseo XLR sight particularly advantageous in asymmetric conflict scenarios, where advanced ships might operate close to shorelines and could be encircled by smaller vessels with unclear intentions.

This extended-range sight will bolster the Brazilian navy’s capacity to tackle both conventional and asymmetric threats by expanding the safety perimeter around its vessels. As part of the vessel’s self-defense framework, the Paseo XLR will identify and assess various threats, even amidst turbulent waters, at high velocities, and in compromised visual conditions. Furthermore, it facilitates day/night fire control of these vessels’ primary weapon systems.

The initial two Paseo XLR sights are anticipated to be delivered to the Aguas Azuis consortium in Brazil in early 2023. Safran Electronics & Defense Brazil, a branch of Safran Electronics & Defense, will offer comprehensive customer support services, encompassing spare parts and maintenance solutions.
