Saudi Arabia Seeks Advanced MK 54 MOD 0 Lightweight Torpedoes

The United States has authorized a prospective Foreign Military Sale to Saudi Arabia, which encompasses MK 54 MOD 0 Lightweight Torpedoes along with accompanying logistical and programmatic support. This arrangement is valued at approximately $78.5 million, as per a recent statement issued by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), which informed Congress of the suggested deal on January 3, 2025.

Saudi Arabia’s application includes 20 fully assembled MK 54 MOD 0 Lightweight Torpedoes (LWT), in addition to related assets such as spare components, recoverable exercise torpedoes (REXTORP), handling devices, containers, training services, manuals, and testing equipment. The package further consists of engineering, technical, and logistical backing provided by both the U.S. government and its contractors.

This transaction corresponds with U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives by reinforcing a vital regional ally contributing to political stability and economic growth within the Gulf. Enhancing Saudi Arabia’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities will strengthen its ability to address present and emerging threats. The nation is anticipated to seamlessly integrate the new systems into its defense apparatus.

The accord will not disturb the military equilibrium in the region. RTX Integrated Defense Systems, located in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, has been designated as the primary contractor, with no offset agreements anticipated. Furthermore, the deal will necessitate temporary visits from up to two representatives from the U.S. government or contractors for technical support and oversight.

The proposed sale will not adversely affect U.S. military preparedness. The estimated total cost represents upper limits, with final amounts likely to be adjusted based on specific requirements, funding availability, and finalized contracts.
