Damen Shipyards Group has formulated a dedicated strategy to address the rising number of inactive Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs) stemming from the current challenges in the offshore oil and gas sector. The Dutch firm’s approach includes transforming dormant PSVs into vessels ready to serve in alternate industries such as aquaculture, maritime transport, and defense.
The crisis currently affecting the offshore oil and gas sector is yielding significant repercussions across the industry. Contributing elements comprise historically low crude oil prices, stalled exploration efforts, and decreased production rates. This detrimental cycle culminates in a notable decline in support vessel daily rates.
Damen possesses a strategy to reactivate these vessels and restore profitability. “Our design teams have generated practical solutions across multiple industries. For instance, we can modify a dormant PSV into a lucrative Container Feeder or, for military use, a Logistic Support Vessel,” explains Damen Sales Manager Remko Hottentot. “The opportunities are extensive. It could also be feasible to convert a PSV into a lodging and Operations and Maintenance (O&M) vessel.”
The expertise in ship transformation originates from Damen’s global network of fifteen repair and modification yards. “Boasting a strong reputation for engineering, craftsmanship, and project management, Damen’s conversion teams possess extensive experience in rejuvenating vessels, all while adhering to schedules and budgets,” remarks Mr. Hottentot.
A notable example of a previously developed proposal is the Damen Live Fish Carrier 8916, tailored for the aquaculture sector. “In this case, utilizing the existing PSV platform proves ideal, offering numerous benefits for transporting live fish.”
Alongside permanent transformation designs, Damen is also capable of creating temporary modifications. These can be utilized on vessels originally constructed by Damen or other shipbuilding firms.
Situated in Damen’s Stavanger office, Sales Manager Norway Remko Hottentot has observed the landscape of ports filled with dormant PSVs. “We can provide substantial design and conversion expertise to vessel owners and operators seeking effective solutions,” he states. “Alongside dependable financial support, this comprises a unique blend of services that can be developed into realistic conversion projects.”
