During an official transfer ceremony at the Den Helder Naval Base, the Royal Netherlands Navy has received three Damen ASD 2810 Hybrid tugs. These new vessels not only enhance ship handling capabilities but are also equipped with state-of-the-art hybrid propulsion systems. This initiative will further the Dutch Ministry of Defence’s commitment to sustainable naval operations.
The acquisition of these three Damen tugs signifies an essential phase in the Royal Netherlands Navy’s ongoing fleet modernization programme. The hybrid ships, designated Noordzee, Waddenzee, and Zuiderzee, can operate in diesel-direct, diesel-electric, or fully-electric modes.
Zero Emissions
This advancement will lead to substantial improvements in fuel efficiency while effectively minimizing exhaust emissions. For instance, sailing in fully-electric mode—feasible for up to one hour at a speed of 4 knots—will result in zero emissions.
This development aligns closely with the Ministry of Defence’s Operational Energy Strategy. Recently unveiled to the Dutch government, it outlines future emissions goals and the shift away from diesel as the primary fuel source.
Next Generation Tug
When operating on diesel, the Damen ASD 2810 Hybrid is capable of storing surplus electrical energy in its battery pack. This stored energy can then power vessel operating systems or be utilized in electric sailing mode.
Beyond their hybrid technologies, the new tugs boast greater power than the vessels they are replacing. The Damen ASD 2810 Hybrid delivers a 60-tonne bollard pull, a marked increase compared to the 22-tonne bollard pull of the existing Linge-class tugs.
This boost in bollard pull will enhance the safe and effective ship handling of the largest vessels within the Royal Netherlands Navy fleet, including HNLMS Johan de Witt, HNLMS Rotterdam, and the 204-meter Joint Support Ship HNLMS Karel Doorman in all maritime conditions.
With the tugs now in operational service, Damen Shipyards Den Helder will carry out a continuous maintenance programme for all three vessels. This is particularly noteworthy as this responsibility has typically been managed by the Royal Netherlands Navy itself. For the first time, Damen has been enlisted for ongoing maintenance duties for the Dutch Navy over an extended timeframe.
