The United States Navy has chosen Raytheon Company on the 23rd of April to supply the new Variable Depth Sonar (VDS) for the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) class. The $27.9 million agreement emerged after a thorough examination and evaluation phase during which Raytheon demonstrated that the solution’s features and capabilities fulfilled all the Navy’s design and performance standards. As a crucial anti-submarine warfare resource, the VDS will be deployed from LCS to identify and monitor adversarial submarines.

“We utilized decades of sonar systems expertise and our renowned capacity for innovation to develop this transformative technology,” remarked Paul Ferraro, vice president of Integrated Defense Systems’ Seapower Capability Systems division at Raytheon. “Raytheon’s dependable, cost-effective variable depth sonar will enable the Navy to quickly integrate this novel anti-submarine capability to fulfill the LCS mission.”

This sonar system, designed for ship deployment and identical for both LCS variants, boasts reduced weight to lessen the impact on the ship, enhanced maneuverability, and provides opportunities for expanded warfighting capabilities. The ease of operation boosts crew efficiency and operational success. These advantages were confirmed by the fleet sailors who utilized the system during a full-scale demonstration at Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute in August 2016.

Raytheon’s VDS benefits from the agility and expertise of a dedicated consortium, including Curtiss Wright-Indal, Adaptive Methods, Inc., Purvis Systems, and Harbor Branch.

Now under contract, Raytheon will progress its design to a complete Pre-Production Test Article, anticipated to be finalized in late 2018. The contract encompasses options for production which, if activated, elevates the total contract value to over $300 million.
