Soaring Towards Sustainability: Boeing’s Vision for a Greener 2024

Boeing has just released its 2024 Sustainability & Social Impact Report, outlining our progress in serving our workforce, our environment, and our surrounding communities.

“We are honored to share the ongoing progress we’ve made in sustainability, which will continually be founded on safety and excellence,” remarked Boeing Chief Sustainability Officer Brian Moran. “As we reaffirm our dedication to these fundamental principles, it’s exciting to observe our organization’s commitment to aiding our industry in decarbonization while enhancing our communities and cultivating an inclusive environment where every voice is respected.”

Key takeaways from this year’s report include:

  • 39% of the energy fueling Boeing’s operations was sourced from renewable electricity in 2023 through a combination of direct purchases and renewable energy certificates.
  • A 6.4-point increase in the representation of racial/ethnic minorities within our U.S. workforce, coupled with a 1.2-point rise in the proportion of women in Boeing’s global workforce since 2020.
  • A 100,000-hour surge in employee volunteer participation in 2023, resulting in a total of 477,000 hours dedicated to charitable efforts worldwide.
  • $60 million contributed by employees, which includes support from the Boeing Gift Match Program to nonprofit organizations.
  • Over 100 key stakeholders engaged, with 20 major events supported by the Boeing Cascade Climate Impact Model, analyzing aviation’s strategies to lower emissions.

Boeing has been enhancing its carbon management framework to adopt a ‘prevent first, remove second’ strategy.

Preventing first involves mitigating carbon emissions by reducing and/or avoiding them at the source, such as through continuous investments in renewable energy and efficient infrastructure while encouraging resource conservation.

Removing second pertains to applying offsets and removals for emissions that are challenging to eliminate. To improve and diversify our offset portfolio over time, Boeing is increasing its investments in permanent carbon removal projects. Furthermore, Boeing will support essential technological and policy developments in alignment with the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), the globally market-driven initiative that our airline clients advocate.
