Saab Gears Up to Supply U.S. Military with Innovative Carl-Gustaf Munitions
Saab has secured a contract for Carl-Gustaf® ammunition from the U.S. Army. The estimated value of the contract is around USD 75 million, with shipments anticipated in 2022.
This shoulder-launched ammunition contract is issued under an Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) agreement established in 2019 between Saab and the U.S. Army. This arrangement permits the client to request orders for Carl-Gustaf ammunition along with the disposable AT4 shoulder-launched weapon systems over a five-year period. The current order for the U.S. Army and Marine Corps encompasses seven distinct types of ammunition, including anti-armor, anti-structure, smoke, and illumination projectiles, emphasizing the adaptability of the versatile Carl-Gustaf system.
“The Carl-Gustaf is a contemporary, adaptable weapon platform engineered by Saab to fulfill the present and future demands of our combat personnel across all battlefield settings. Our Carl-Gustaf ammunition enhances our system’s versatility and ensures effective performance against armored targets, soft targets, and urban infrastructures. We take immense pride in Saab’s 35-year legacy of providing our battle-tested family of weapon systems to the U.S. Armed Forces,” stated Erik Smith, President and CEO of Saab in the U.S.
Saab’s Carl-Gustaf system (referred to as MAAWS in the U.S.) boasts a long and successful history with the U.S. military. The reloadable multi-role system has been operational in the U.S. since 1990, having been established as a record program for the U.S. Army since 2013. In 2018, the U.S. Army announced it would acquire the latest iteration of this weapon – the Carl-Gustaf M4 (designated M3E1 in the U.S.).
This order was registered during the second quarter of 2021.
