Naval Group Unveils Game-Changing MPLS Launcher at Euronaval
At the Euronaval 2024 event, Naval Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in partnership with Thales and KNDS to work collaboratively on integrating their advancements into the multipurpose and modular launching system (MPLS). This marks a notable technological leap focused on bolstering operational superiority, tackling various asymmetric and evolving threats. The MPLS is designed to launch multiple effectors, showcasing remarkable payload capacities and seamless onboard integration.
A unified launcher for various self-defense technologies
Shifting away from the conventional “one launcher for each type of weapon” approach, the MPLS embodies a completely novel system paradigm.
The MPLS features adaptable ammunition modules that can be tailored to fulfill operational requirements, providing a flexible selection of effectors (rockets, missiles, grenades, underwater munitions, decoys, UAVs) to effectively address an array of threats. The ammunition capacity has been significantly improved, nearing 1,000 kilos. Additionally, a vessel can accommodate one or multiple MPLS turrets, facilitating a mix of varied weapon configurations.
Equipped with a turret that can pivot on two axes—rotation and elevation—the MPLS integrates firing computers and a fire control system that supports precise engagements of moving targets. It operates autonomously or can be linked to the combat system.
This sophisticated weapon system adopts a fleet-centric strategy, enhancing logistical backing and crew training. It stands as a reliable assurance of cost benefits, alongside operational preparedness.

An innovative partnership model
The MPLS not only introduces a groundbreaking system concept but also establishes a novel partnership framework for product development and marketing. As the system is designed to accommodate various ammunition types according to operational user needs, Naval Group collaborates with its partners to include each ammunition module.
Thales contributes its 70 and 68 mm rockets, along with Lightweight Multi-role Missiles (LMM), while KNDS offers its range of innovative ammunition. Collaborative efforts have also initiated with MBDA to incorporate Mistral and Akeron family missiles.
