“Naval Group Announces Milestone: Fifth FDI Frigate Order Confirmed”

Recently, the French Government’s defense procurement and technology agency announced the order for the fifth Defense and Intervention Frigate (FDI) for the French Navy (Marine nationale). This order follows the previous one for the fourth frigate, placed back in December 2025.

This fifth FDI frigate is an essential component of a program encompassing the delivery of five units to the French Navy, signifying a significant enhancement of naval capabilities. Pierre Éric Pommellet, Chairman and CEO of Naval Group, stated, “With these orders for FDI frigates 4 and 5, planned under the LPM, the Ministry of the Armed Forces reaffirms its trust in us to deliver a series of advanced defense and intervention frigates. We are fully committed to equipping the French Navy with the necessary tools for achieving naval superiority, thereby upholding France’s sovereignty.”

Manufactured at Naval Group’s facility in Lorient, these upcoming fourth and fifth units, in conjunction with the four FDI frigates designated for the Hellenic Navy, will culminate in the production of nine sophisticated defense and intervention frigates.

The FDI is a state-of-the-art combat vessel, ready for high-intensity operations across global seas. This first-rank frigate displays exceptional capabilities across a wide spectrum of combat scenarios: anti-aircraft, anti-submarine, anti-surface, and against asymmetric threats.

Its evolutionary and versatile design integrates all necessary functionalities, enabling it to tackle both current and future challenges independently or as part of a fleet. It effectively neutralizes threats such as next-generation submarines, supersonic missiles, cyberattacks, and multifaceted asymmetric dangers. Equipped with cutting-edge digital technologies and data-processing systems, the FDI operates seamlessly across all operational theaters, making it an invaluable asset for modern navies.

The compact design and distinctive layout make the FDI particularly adept at navigating various maritime environments, including rough seas and colder waters. Its capabilities were recently validated during initial sea trials—the Admiral Ronarc’h successfully demonstrated its performance in sea conditions up to state 6 in the Atlantic Ocean.

Additionally, the innovative design and integrated automation systems aboard the FDI facilitate operation with a minimized crew size. This frigate ensures optimal maintainability, significantly reducing maintenance duration and enhancing operational readiness. Its versatility and high operational capacity position it as a formidable player in the realm of multi-mission naval warfare.
