Soaring Innovations: Saab Unveils Cutting-Edge Fighter Radar
Important Alert
Saab has successfully finalized the preliminary aerial evaluations of its latest fighter X-band Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, set to enhance Saab’s PS-05/A radar series.
Continuing to advance core AESA technology, Saab has effectively concluded the initial flight tests of the new X-band AESA radar. These evaluations were conducted successfully, capturing data while identifying and monitoring various targets.
This radar system is specifically tailored for fighter jets and can be customized for different platforms. As previously disclosed by Saab, a variant of the new AESA antenna has already been delivered to a U.S. Government client.
“This marks a significant milestone in the evolution of our new fighter AESA radar. We foresee tremendous potential for this radar; its modular, adaptable, and scalable design allows it to be utilized for a variety of applications,” states Anders Carp, Senior Vice President and head of Saab’s Surveillance business division.
The aircraft utilized during the flight tests was a Gripen D, which is currently available with Saab’s latest Mk4 radar. The upgraded radar version can be proposed to Gripen C/D operators as an enhancement.
The new AESA radar incorporates Gallium Nitride (GaN), a material that facilitates reduced power consumption and superior heat tolerance. This enhancement promotes broader bandwidth and increased reliability, availability, and efficiency. The X-band AESA radar is expected to demonstrate enhanced performance against smaller targets, improved Electronic Counter-Countermeasures (ECCM) capabilities, and greater support for advanced weapon systems.
