Egyptian Navy Partners with Safran for Cutting-Edge Optronic and Navigation Enhancements on Patrol Vessels

The Egyptian Navy has selected Safran to outfit 10 Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) with state-of-the-art optronic and navigation technologies. NVL Egypt, a collaborative endeavor between Lürssen and the Government of Egypt (GOE), has opted for Safran’s VIGY 4 optronic systems and Argonyx inertial navigation solutions to significantly enhance Egypt’s naval defense capabilities.

VIGY 4 is a compact, stabilized, long-range panoramic observation and targeting system. It can detect, identify, and monitor threats effectively. It is especially adept for operations in low visibility, at night, and in adverse weather, cutting through fog, for instance, due to its SWIR (Short Wave InfraRed) channel. The VIGY 4 system can also operate small and medium-caliber armaments.

Utilizing HRG Crystal gyroscope technology, a proprietary innovation by Safran, the Argonyx inertial navigation solution delivers all the crucial data required for navigation.

This sophisticated navigation technology also provides exceptional performance in environments lacking satellite navigation signals (GNSS-denied) and adheres to the highest standards for the stabilization of weapon systems.

“We take pride in being a part of the modernization of the Egyptian Navy,” stated Alexandre Ziegler, Executive VP, Defense GBU of Safran Electronics & Defense. “Our innovations will improve the precision and safety of its maritime operations, thereby reinforcing our dedication to aiding the sovereignty of nations with our advanced technologies.”

These advanced systems will be fitted onto OPVs, which are set to be constructed in Egypt at Alexandria Shipyard.
