Saab Launches Groundbreaking Autonomous Innovations for Naval Vessels

Saab reveals its Autonomous Ocean Core, a deployable autonomous management framework intended to prepare both surface and subsurface naval platforms for defense and civilian missions.

The Autonomous Ocean Core is a platform-agnostic control system featuring an open architecture, designed to transform vessels into autonomous entities, thereby enhancing their operational success at sea. It provides fundamental autonomy, covering vessel handling for assets functioning on or below the oceanic surface and allows operators to gradually incorporate additional features without sacrificing built-in safety protocols.

With the advent of the Autonomous Ocean Core, uncrewed vessels are capable of undertaking operations such as mine detection and clearance, intelligence acquisition, surveillance, reconnaissance, and even electronic warfare initiatives.

The system presents a variety of modes for mission navigation, each promoting accurate control and operational flexibility in line with specific mission needs. Additionally, the system can be set up to function in three differentiated ways, each customized to accommodate unique operational requirements and safety measures.

This solution is prepared to perform tasks immediately upon initiation, independent of enhanced capabilities. With safety ensured, it establishes a solid groundwork for advancing autonomy functions through Saab’s continuous innovations and partnerships with external developers.

“The progress of unmanned and autonomous naval systems is advancing, enhancing capabilities for maritime security missions. The Autonomous Ocean Core can fortify essential operational advantages for tasks that are dull, dirty, dangerous, and expensive. This control framework offers our clients a strategic edge, enhancing availability and efficiency while decreasing dependence on active personnel,” states Mats Wicksell, Senior Vice President and Head of Saab’s Business Area Kockums.

Saab’s proficiency in autonomous systems includes Autonomous Surface Vessels (ASVs) and Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) that interact with seabed infrastructure, engage in anti-submarine warfare training, and participate in mine detection operations.
