Copenhagen/Paris, June 2, 2016 – On May 12, DCNS, Chemring Countermeasures, and Terma conducted collaborative operational trials of their Torpedo Defence System. This advanced solution combines Terma’s C-Guard Decoy Launching System* with DCNS’s CANTO® Anti-Torpedo Decoy, along with the Chemring Launch Module, which collectively is designated NATO standard CANTO® 130mm.
The principal aim of the trials was to verify the live operation of the CANTO® 130mm decoy in its function to divert incoming torpedoes from their intended target; the vessel deploying the decoy.
Furthermore, the trials sought to demonstrate the efficacy of the Chemring launch module and the Terma C-Guard’s capability to deploy the decoy.
Once the CANTO® 130mm decoy is released from C-Guard and enters the water, it begins generating numerous acoustic signatures which obscure the sound from the vessel and create multiple false targets, thus confusing the guidance system of the approaching torpedo. By administering
CANTO® decoys strategically alongside evasive maneuvers, the ship can navigate away from the torpedo’s target zone to safety while the torpedo, homing in on the false targets produced by the decoy, ultimately exhausts its energy or fuel.
The trials, conducted with the support of The Royal Danish Navy (RDN) and The Danish Defense Acquisition and Logistics Organization (DALO), were executed from the Danish Frigate HDMS Iver Huitfeldt off the coast of Northern Zealand, Denmark.
According to René d’Ambrières, Director of DCNS Underwater Weapons Business Unit, the results of the trials were notably successful: “All expectations set prior to the trials were met, and DCNS, Chemring, and Terma are all highly pleased to confirm their capability to innovate advanced anti-torpedo warfare systems, including the design and manufacturing of countermeasures, proven at sea on naval platforms, which is a significant asset in the global naval market.”
Following the fruitful trial, C-Guard is now the leading and currently the only Decoy Launching System completely integrated with the CANTO® 130mm anti-torpedo functionality and fully qualified to release CANTO® 130mm decoys.
As a result of these successful trials, Terma Commercial Product Manager Simon Jensen expresses: “The future outlook for Terma and DCNS is to enhance the partnership of C-Guard and CANTO® 130mm and advocate a cutting-edge torpedo defense solution for current and evolving needs in torpedo self-protection systems for naval units worldwide.”
