Northrop Grumman Launches the Revolutionary Next-Gen Bushmaster® Chain Gun®!

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC), a prominent producer of medium-caliber artillery, is unveiling its advanced M230 Link Fed (M230LF) Dual Feed Bushmaster® Chain Gun®, which presents two ammunition feed pathways for the first time. This state-of-the-art 30x113mm medium caliber chain gun is a validated model of the M230LF chain gun designed to engage uncrewed aerial systems (C-UAS) and ground combat operations.

The introduction of a dual feed mechanism eliminates the necessity for assorted ammunition belts within a singular feed.

Now, the capability to alternate between two distinct types of munitions is achievable. A typically recommended ammunition configuration includes XM1211 proximity fused projectiles for C-UAS and XM1198 high explosive, dual-purpose projectiles for anti-armor functionality.

The M230LF is currently at Technology Readiness Level 6. Reaching this milestone allows for live-fire demonstrations slated for early 2025.

Expert Opinion:

Dave Fine, vice president, armament systems at Northrop Grumman: “The M230LF Dual Feed Bushmaster Chain Gun delivers enhanced versatility through the ability to toggle between ammunition pathways utilizing dual-feed innovation. With cutting-edge technology paired with five decades of combat-proven expertise, this next-gen cannon will enable operators to swiftly respond to threats. This chain gun is the latest addition to our Bushmaster series, delivering dependable, multi-mission capabilities in response to the changing threat landscape.”

About the M230LF Dual Feed Bushmaster:

As the inaugural medium caliber chain gun globally to incorporate a dual feed, the M230LF provides flexible lethality suited to the evolving combat environment. The weapon system can instantly alternate between ammunition pathways, allowing operators to adeptly target different needs with varying 30x113mm ammunition types.

A dual feed configuration bestows operators the ability to switch between sophisticated ammunition rounds with a simple switch, enhancing mission adaptability and destructive capability. The option to choose between two munitions ensures that targets are engaged with the most suitable round for their type, optimizing time, alleviating logistical challenges, and allowing for additional engagements before needing to replenish the system.

For users currently employing the M230LF, the Bushmaster maintains a comparable weight to the single feed M230LF and boasts 60%-part commonality, resulting in expedited routine maintenance and reduced downtime. Production of single feed M230LF cannons will persist for clients who prefer that variant.
