
Kuwait Unveils M1A2K Tank’s Cutting-Edge Operational Training Munitions
The Department of State has issued a declaration approving a prospective Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Kuwait for M1A2K tank operational and training munitions along with associated equipment, estimated at a cost of $250 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency has submitted the necessary certification to notify Congress of this potential sale today.
The Government of Kuwait has expressed interest in acquiring Cartridge M80 Ball/M62 Tracer 7.62mm 4/1 linked; Cartridge MK211 4 Armor Piercing Incendiary (APIT) .50 Cal 4/1 linked; Cartridge M903/M962 Saboted Light Armor Penetrator-Tracer (SLAP-T) .50 Cal 4/1 linked; Cartridge KE-W A1 Armor-Piercing, Fin-Stabilized, Discarding Sabot-Tracer (APFSDS-T) 120mm; Cartridge, Insensitive Munition High Explosive Tracer (IM-HET) 120mm; Screening-Smoke Grenade; containers; munitions; support and testing apparatus; integration and testing assistance; spare and repair components; U.S. Government and contractor engineering, technological and logistical support services; as well as other related aspects of logistical and program assistance. The projected cost is $250 million.
This proposed transaction will bolster the foreign policy and security objectives of the United States by enhancing the defense capabilities of a Major Non-NATO ally that plays a crucial role in fostering political stability and economic development in the Middle East.
The suggested sale will elevate Kuwait’s capability to tackle existing and future regional dangers by facilitating sustained operation of the M1A2 Abrams main battle tank while assisting in the modernization of the nation’s armored fleet. This acquisition will empower Kuwait to effectively deter and defend against terrestrial threats, thereby strengthening its capacity to safeguard border areas and vital land-based infrastructure. Kuwait will seamlessly integrate this equipment into its armed forces.
The proposed procurement of this equipment and assistance will not disrupt the fundamental military equilibrium in the region.
The main contractor will be General Dynamics, located in York, PA. There are no known offset arrangements suggested in relation to this potential deal.
Execution of this proposed sale will not necessitate the deployment of any additional U.S. Government or contractor personnel to Kuwait.
There will be no negative impact on U.S. defense readiness arising from this proposed transaction.
