“Rheinmetall Partners with Canadian Navy for 30 Years of Cutting-Edge Decoy Technology”

During the recent CANSEC exhibition in May 2016 in Canada, the Canadian government, along with ammunition producers Rheinmetall and General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems–Canada, established a licensing agreement for the fabrication of Omnitrap decoy ammunition designed for the Canadian Navy. This agreement, valued at a substantial mid-range eight-figure euro sum over its three-decade duration, comprises the provision of critical components from Rheinmetall for the Omnitrap decoy munitions. Rheinmetall is set to provide technical assistance in the establishment of the assembly line at the General Dynamics facility situated in Repentigny, QC, where the final assembly will be conducted.

In 2009, Rheinmetall obtained a contract to furnish twelve Canadian Halifax-class frigates with the Multi Ammunition Softkill System (MASS). This automated decoy system offers a remarkable level of defense against incoming anti-ship missiles and can be integrated on various vessels, either in standalone mode or as a vital component of the ship’s command, control, and weapons engagement system. Currently, MASS is operational with the navies of 13 nations, with many Canadian frigates equipped with MASS systems alongside a typical supply of Omnitrap and MASS Dueras decoys.

In 2015, the Canadian government placed an order for 2,450 Omnitrap decoy rounds from Rheinmetall and General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems–Canada.

In the second quarter of 2016, Rheinmetall registered an order valued at €2.5 million. The newly formalized agreement will enhance this supply partnership and the support that both companies provide to the Canadian government and PSPC (Public Service Procurement Canada) over the next 30 years.

General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems–Canada produces Rheinmetall’s 40mm LV and HV rounds as well as parachute illumination rockets under license for the Canadian Armed Forces.
