Leonardo, a global leader in aerospace, defense, and security, has shown a solid commitment to Poland through strategic partnerships and investments aimed at advancing the country’s defense capabilities, further reaffirmed with today’s substantial milestone. Today, PZL-Świdnik, the Polish entity wholly owned by Leonardo, celebrated the launch of the production line for AW149 helicopters designated for the Polish Armed Forces, alongside the start of new localized manufacturing initiatives, honoring its commitment to the innovative helicopter program.
The organization’s dedication to technology transfer and domestic production has stimulated growth in the country’s skill base, allowing for the swift deployment of cutting-edge technologies to clients, ensuring that the Polish Armed Forces are well-prepared to confront challenges in the operational arena with the advanced multirole AW149 military helicopter.
The official inauguration event was attended by representatives and dignitaries from national and local organizations, alongside Leonardo, PZL-Świdnik, and cooperative partners. This significant achievement marks a new technological phase for both PZL-Świdnik facilities and the national supply chain and military services.
As a member of Leonardo, PZL-Świdnik leverages distinctive industrial advantages in terms of rapid delivery and adaptability to fulfill stringent deadlines and urgent requirements amid the geopolitical landscape. The first AW149 units were crafted in Vergiate (Italy), where Polish personnel received on-the-job training, ensuring timely deliveries within a condensed timeframe, handing over helicopters just 15 months after contract signing. The majority of the AW149s for the Polish Armed Forces will be produced in Poland.
The Polish Ministry of Defense’s AW149 project hinges on local production through PZL-Świdnik, which represents a strategic decision by Poland to ensure both national defense and significant industrial gains. The agreement for 32 AW149s was finalized in Świdnik in 2022 and includes the integration of the helicopter’s systems, specialized armament, future upgrades, and comprehensive technical support throughout the entire lifespan of the Polish AW149 fleet. Thanks to local production, Poland is establishing a domestic logistics framework and technical facilities located near the Polish Land Forces, complemented by advanced helicopters.
Gian Piero Cutillo, Managing Director of Leonardo Helicopters, stated: “PZL-Świdnik represents the utmost standards of excellence within our organization, achieving impressive results across all sectors and possessing remarkable potential for future development. Correspondingly, there is an increasing expectation for our establishment in Świdnik to evolve from a manufacturer to a crucial market influencer capable of handling complex contracts and deliveries. The Polish Ministry of Defense’s AW149 program exemplifies this evolution today.”
“The localization of industrial and logistical capabilities for these new helicopters to meet Poland’s requirements harnesses the long-standing and unique expertise of PZL-Świdnik and its talented workforce, combined with the exceptional operational attributes of the AW149s that will provide unparalleled advantages to the nation.”
Jacek Libucha, President of PZL-Świdnik, noted: “The previous year marked a period of multi-million investments, encompassing infrastructure, technology, and facilities, particularly in the building currently housing full production of the AW149. Alongside the production of the AW149, we are entering a new phase for the Świdnik facilities – this was clear to me from the beginning when I was named CEO of PZL-Świdnik – we needed a new advanced helicopter production line to enhance our expertise, which must come with cutting-edge technology transfer. This also aligns with the Armed Forces’ rigorous demands, and these helicopters will provide them with top-notch combat support. This is precisely what the platform is engineered to achieve.”
The new production line serves as a driving force for change, reminiscent of when PZL-Świdnik became a center of excellence for helicopter aerostructures, contributing to the launch of the AW139 program several years ago. Now, just over a decade later, revenues at PZL-Świdnik have surged more than fourfold, resulting in increased export sales and a broader technological and product portfolio. The Świdnik-based enterprise has significantly expanded this year by securing new contracts and leveraging technological and capability investments promised by Leonardo to fortify its standing in the competitive arena.
In Poland, PZL-Świdnik boasts a workforce of 3,240 employees (20% of whom are engineers) dedicated to supporting its clientele, while the Polish Military is recognized as a strategic ally. PZL-Świdnik is powered by an enthusiastic team, with engineers constituting 20%, while a growing pool of young talent and top-tier test pilots (level-1) cater to the needs of the Polish Army and other clients. These pilots displayed an engaging demonstration of the AW149 during today’s ceremony.
