“Revolutionary Upgrades: Egyptian Navy Teams with Safran for Next-Gen Optronic and Navigation Systems on Patrol Ships”

The Egyptian Navy has chosen Safran to equip 10 Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) with cutting-edge optronic and navigational technologies. NVL Egypt, a joint initiative between Lürssen and the Government of Egypt (GOE), has selected Safran’s VIGY 4 optronic systems and Argonyx inertial navigation solutions to significantly bolster Egypt’s maritime defense capabilities.

VIGY 4 is a compact, stabilized, long-range panoramic observation and targeting apparatus. It is capable of detecting, identifying, and tracking threats effectively. Particularly well-suited for operations in low visibility, nocturnal conditions, and adverse weather, it excels in penetrating fog, thanks to its SWIR (Short Wave InfraRed) channel. The VIGY 4 system can also manage small and medium-caliber weaponry.

Employing HRG Crystal gyroscope technology, a unique innovation from Safran, the Argonyx inertial navigation solution provides all essential data necessary for navigation.

This advanced navigation technology delivers outstanding performance in environments where satellite navigation signals are absent (GNSS-denied) and complies with the highest criteria for the stabilization of weapon systems.

“We are honored to be part of the modernization of the Egyptian Navy,” remarked Alexandre Ziegler, Executive VP, Defense GBU of Safran Electronics & Defense. “Our innovations will enhance the accuracy and safety of its naval operations, further demonstrating our commitment to supporting the sovereignty of nations through our superior technologies.”

These sophisticated systems will be installed on OPVs, which are scheduled to be constructed in Egypt at Alexandria Shipyard.
