Japan Unveils the Revolutionary Patria AMV XP 8×8: A Game Changer for National Defense!

The premier Patria AMV XP 8×8 armored vehicle under the Japan Wheeled Armored Personnel Carrier (‘WAPC’) 8×8 program has been delivered by Japan Steel Works (‘JWS’) to the Japan Self-Ground Defense Forces (JSGDF) in Japan. This significant transfer occurred during a formal ceremony on September 2, 2025, at JSW’s Muroran facility in Hokkaido, Japan. Patria became involved in the domestic WAPC initiative in August 2023, paving the way for substantial collaboration, including the exchange of technology to Japan.

“Japan has now secured its position as the ninth country to incorporate Patria AMV vehicles, becoming part of the international AMV framework. This impressive milestone represents genuine and effective cooperation between Patria, the Japan Self-Ground Defense Forces, and Japan Steel Works, resulting in favorable outcomes. Ongoing dialogues with the Japan Self-Defense Forces and local enterprises are investigating new opportunities, and Patria is wholeheartedly committed to enduring strategic partnerships with Japan,” proclaims Jussi Järvinen, Executive Vice President of Protected Mobility at Patria.

Janne Räkköläinen, Vice President of Global Market Area at Patria, elaborates: “The Patria AMV 8×8 XP has been selected to replace the JSGDF’s inventory of Type-96 8×8 vehicles, providing unparalleled mobility, defense, and modularity to meet a variety of JSGDF needs. We are confident that Japanese forces will be exceptionally satisfied with the capabilities of the next generation following the introduction of the initial armored vehicles.”

The Patria AMV XP 8×8 stands out as an innovative, modular, and resilient armored wheeled vehicle, delivering exceptional firepower, defense, and mobility. The combat-proven AMV series from Patria has gained insights from numerous missions and has become the dependable choice for protecting nations and their personnel. The Patria AMV XP offers a cost-effective, future-proof solution for rising demands in scenarios where national sovereignty is paramount.

Strategies for technology transfer and local manufacturing are vital components of Patria’s business framework. In addition to the ongoing technology exchange with Japan, Patria has already successfully conducted technology transfers as part of industrial engagement and local production for the AMV 8×8 in nations such as Poland, Croatia, and South Africa. Furthermore, Patria is currently involved in technology transfer for the Slovakian AMV 8×8 initiative.
