“Revolutionizing Air Defense: MBDA’s CAMM Enhances the Royal Navy’s Type 45 Destroyers”
The project will enable the integration of CAMM (Common Anti-Air Modular Missile) with an enhanced Sea Viper command and control (C2) system for the inaugural time. CAMM provides exceptional close-range and local-area air defense, and will enhance Aster 30, bolstering the anti-air defense capabilities of the Royal Navy.
Equipping the Type 45 destroyers with CAMM will deliver a 50% boost in the quantity of air defense missiles available. This installation will include 24 additional launcher cells, while the Sea Viper C2 will undergo a technological upgrade, significantly enhancing its processing capabilities.
The pre-existing 48 Sylver cells on the Type 45 will now be designated exclusively for the longer-range Aster 30 missile, which is also currently undergoing a mid-life refurbishment. This enhancement ensures that the missile will remain operational throughout the lifespan of the Type 45 fleet.
CAMM has already been supplied to both the British Army and the Royal Navy, where it serves as the interceptor in both ground-based air defense (GBAD) and naval-based air defense (NBAD) frameworks, allowing these forces to deploy missiles from a unified inventory.
In operation on modernized Royal Navy Type 23 frigates, CAMM will also be installed on Type 26 and Type 31 vessels in the foreseeable future. The CAMM series has demonstrated rapid success among international clients, with countries such as Canada and Brazil joining the ranks of new users ordering the missile this year.
