C-Guard Shines in Maritime Tests with Cutting-Edge 130mm CANTO® Anti-Torpedo Defense System
Copenhagen/Paris, June 2, 2016 – On May 12, DCNS, Chemring Countermeasures, and Terma collaborated on operational testing of their innovative Torpedo Defense System. This sophisticated solution merges Terma’s C-Guard Decoy Launching System with DCNS’s CANTO® Anti-Torpedo Decoy, alongside the Chemring Launch Module, collectively referred to as NATO standard CANTO® 130mm.
The primary objective of the trials was to validate the live functionality of the CANTO® 130mm decoy in its role to redirect incoming torpedoes away from their intended target—the vessel deploying the decoy.
Moreover, the trials aimed to showcase the effectiveness of the Chemring launch module and the Terma C-Guard’s capability to deploy the decoy efficiently.
Once the CANTO® 130mm decoy is deployed from C-Guard and enters the water, it begins generating a variety of acoustic signatures that obscure the vessel’s sound while creating multiple false targets, thus misleading the guidance system of the approaching torpedo. By strategically deploying CANTO® decoys alongside evasive actions, the ship can maneuver away from the torpedo’s targeted area, ensuring safe passage while the torpedo, drawn to the misleading signals from the decoy, exhausts its energy or fuel.
The trials, supported by The Royal Danish Navy (RDN) and The Danish Defense Acquisition and Logistics Organization (DALO), were carried out from the Danish Frigate HDMS Iver Huitfeldt off the coast of Northern Zealand, Denmark.
According to René d’Ambrières, Director of the DCNS Underwater Weapons Business Unit, the outcomes of the trials were significantly successful: “All expectations set prior to the trials were met, and DCNS, Chemring, and Terma are all extremely satisfied to confirm their ability to innovate advanced anti-torpedo warfare systems, including the design and production of countermeasures, proven at sea on naval platforms, which is a substantial advantage in the global naval sector.”
Following the successful trial, C-Guard is now recognized as the leading and currently the only Decoy Launching System fully integrated with the CANTO® 130mm anti-torpedo functionality, completely qualified to release CANTO® 130mm decoys.
As an outcome of these effective trials, Simon Jensen, Terma Commercial Product Manager, remarked: “The future outlook for Terma and DCNS is to enhance the partnership of C-Guard and CANTO® 130mm and promote an advanced torpedo defense solution for the current and emerging requirements in torpedo self-protection systems for naval units globally.”
