Submarine Innovation: Navy’s Tomahawk Missiles Set a New Precedent

In a groundbreaking demonstration, the U.S. Navy successfully test-launched two Tomahawk cruise missiles manufactured by Raytheon (NYSE: RTN) using newly engineered submarine payload tubes aboard the Virginia-class USS North Dakota (SSN-784). These tests, carried out in the Gulf of Mexico near the Florida coast, confirmed the submarine’s ability to load, transport, and execute vertical launches of Tomahawk missiles from the innovative Block III Virginia Payload Tube. These advanced tubes minimize components and enhance reliability.

In addition to the updated payload tubes, the Navy is also developing a new Virginia Payload Module. These modules will triple the carrying capacity of Tomahawk missiles on Virginia-class submarines, thereby significantly boosting each submarine’s offensive capabilities.

“As the Navy continues to modernize its submarines, Raytheon is simultaneously upgrading the Tomahawk, ensuring this unmatched weapon remains ahead of emerging threats,” expressed Mike Jarrett, Vice President of Raytheon Air Warfare Systems. “Today’s Tomahawk has undergone substantial advancements compared to earlier versions, and the forthcoming iteration will integrate even more capabilities, preparing our sailors for the challenges that lie ahead for years to come.”

The U.S. Navy is also enhancing the communication and navigation systems of the Tomahawk Block IV, integrating a multi-mode seeker that enables it to engage high-value, mobile threats at sea. These updated Tomahawks are scheduled for deployment starting in 2019 and are projected to remain in the U.S. Navy’s inventory beyond 2040.

Having been utilized in combat over 2,300 times, Tomahawk cruise missiles enable U.S. and British forces to neutralize integrated air defense systems and conduct long-range precision strikes on high-value targets. Surface vessels and various submarine models can accommodate more than 100 Tomahawks as needed.
