“Revolutionizing Defense: Leonardo and Rheinmetall Unite for Cutting-Edge Land Solutions”
Leonardo and Rheinmetall have officially established a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch an innovative 50:50 joint venture concentrating on enhancing a European industrial and technological strategy within the realm of land defense systems.
The purpose of this collaboration is the industrial progression and subsequent commercialization of the pioneering Main Battle Tank (MBT) and the contemporary Lynx Platform for the Armoured Infantry Combat System (AICS), aligning with the Italian Army’s terrestrial systems initiatives.
Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG: “In partnership with Leonardo, two leading European defense technology providers are joining forces to accomplish ambitious objectives. Our intention is to set new standards and clear the path for a new generation of sophisticated combat vehicles for Europe. In doing so, we aim to serve the Italian market along with other allied nations seeking to modernize their combat systems.”
Roberto Cingolani, CEO of Leonardo: “The technological and industrial partnerships between Leonardo and Rheinmetall offer a remarkable opportunity to produce state-of-the-art Main Battle Tanks and Infantry Vehicles. We regard this agreement as a crucial step in fostering a European defense ecosystem.”
Specifically, the forthcoming joint venture – headquartered in Italy – will act as the Lead System Integrator, primary contractor, and system integrator for both the Italian initiatives (MBT and AICS) and will delineate the roadmap for engagement in the future European Main Ground Combat System (MGCS).
Within the MBT and AICS projects, mission systems, electronic platforms, and weapon integration will be crafted and manufactured by Leonardo in accordance with the requirements of the Italian client. These innovations will also establish the foundation for the creation of future European MBT (MGCS) and new models aimed at global export. With the advanced Panther main battle tank and the cutting-edge Lynx infantry fighting vehicle, Rheinmetall possesses the essential technological basis for both programs.
Final assembly facilities, certification assessments, delivery procedures, and logistical support will occur in Italy, ensuring a domestic workshare of 60%.
The implementation of the MoU confirmed today will depend on prior approval from the pertinent regulatory agencies, including the European Commission and relevant national competition authorities.
