“Spain Bolsters Skies: Upcoming Deployment of Advanced NASAMS Air Defense Systems”
Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (‘KONGSBERG’) has successfully concluded a pact with the Spanish government for the delivery of the most recent version of the NASAMS air defense system as a component of the modernization project for the air defense capabilities of the Spanish Armed Forces.
The contract’s estimated worth is around EUR 410 million.
“We are excited to strengthen our long-standing collaboration with the Spanish Army and the Spanish Air and Space Force through provisions that will greatly enhance Spain’s current NASAMS capabilities and further reinforce the partnership between Spain and Norway,” commented Eirik Lie, President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.
“As one of the pioneering adopters of NASAMS, Spain has relied on this advanced and combat-proven system to safeguard against both present and future threats,” expressed Tom Laliberty, president of Land & Air Defense Systems at Raytheon, an RTX company. “With this agreement, Spain will not only augment its existing air defense capabilities but also contribute to the wider European security architecture.”
The contract signing follows the award notification issued by the Spanish Armaments Directorate, Dirección General de Armamento y Material (DGAM), on 19 April, which has been communicated by KONGSBERG.
NASAMS stands as the leading medium-range air defense system worldwide, collaboratively developed by KONGSBERG and Raytheon.
Spain was the first international operator of NASAMS and has utilized this platform for more than two decades. Current Spanish NASAMS units are deployed in the Baltics, serving as part of NATO’s Air Shielding Mission. At present, there are 13 nations, including NATO and partner countries, participating in the NASAMS user consortium.
