DEVESELU, Romania (July 11, 2016) —In May, the U.S. Navy announced the operational status of the initial Aegis Ashore missile defense installation, extending the missile defense shield for Southern Europe. The Aegis Ashore facility utilizes Raytheon’s Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block IB guided missiles.

“No other regional missile defense solution compares to the SM-3 when it comes to its speed, range, and protected area,” said Dr. Mitch Stevison, Raytheon’s Vice President of Air and Missile Defense. “The SM-3s positioned at the Romania site now provide continuous, land-based protection.”

That same month saw the inauguration of the Aegis Ashore site in Redzikowo, Poland, as U.S. and Polish authorities formally commenced construction. The Poland installation will be equipped to launch the upcoming variant of the SM-3, the Block IIA, and is expected to be completed by 2018.

Aegis Ashore, alongside the SM-3, successfully intercepted a ballistic missile target during a flight mission in December 2015 at the Aegis Ashore Missile Defense Test Complex situated in Pacific Missile Range Facility, Hawaii. The guided missile eliminated an intermediate-range ballistic missile target in a ‘launch-on-remote’ engagement, utilizing track data from a remote Raytheon AN/TPY-2 radar to cue the Aegis BMD Weapon System and deploy the SM-3 missile.

About Standard Missile-3

Deployed from sea or land, SM-3s neutralize incoming ballistic missile threats in space with mere kinetic energy, similar to the impact of a 10-ton truck moving at 600 mph. The U.S. Navy applies the same logistics and support for both land-based and sea-based variants, resulting in cost, time, and training efficiencies.
