Leonardo has entered into a contract valued at approximately €5 million with the prime contractor Japan Radio Company to supply Mode 5-capable Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) systems for four platforms utilized by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Forces (JGSDF). Leonardo will deliver its IFF Mode 5 M426 LPI Interrogator along with the SIT2010 Crypto Applique products, assuring readiness for the ‘Mode-4 sunset’ in June 2020, during which an array of allied armed forces will transition to the new Mode 5 standard.

IFF technology is essential for the safety of military operations, allowing crews to discern friendly units and identify potentially hostile contacts. Mode 5 represents the most recent and sophisticated IFF standard, employing advanced cryptographic techniques to protect systems against electronic deception from adversaries.

Having already supplied its SIT-422/5J interrogator systems for the JGSDF, by providing the Mode-5 M426 LPI interrogator and SIT2010 crypto, Leonardo will deliver a comprehensive, digital Mode-5-ready solution in a compact, lightweight format.

Leonardo stands as a pioneer in IFF technology, being the first non-U.S. company to supply IFF systems to the Japan Ground Self-Defense Forces in 2016. Since then, in collaboration with Japan Radio Company, Leonardo has emerged as a key supplier of Mode 5-capable IFF technology for the Japanese Ministry of Defence.

The company also provides IFF solutions to various armed forces globally, including those of Italy and the UK. In the UK, Leonardo collaborates to upgrade over 350 platforms to the new Mode-5 standard. As the sole source of Mode 5 cryptography key generation technology outside of the United States, its IFF products are compatible with NATO and allied forces and are readily exportable. Leonardo’s offerings come with a customizable approach designed to meet the specific requirements of diverse international clients.
