Germany Greenlights Additional Eurofighter Sales to Saudi Arabia

Germany is ready to facilitate additional transfers of Eurofighter jets to Saudi Arabia, stated German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Sunday. Berlin paused arms transactions to Saudi Arabia following the assassination of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi within the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in 2018.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz had resisted pressure to resume the delivery of Eurofighters to Saudi Arabia. His coalition ally, the Greens, had firmly opposed this action, highlighting concerns over human rights and Saudi Arabia’s involvement in the Yemen conflict.

“We do not observe the German government obstructing British deliberations regarding more Eurofighters for Saudi Arabia,” Baerbock, a member of the Green party, remarked to reporters during her visit to Israel.

The Eurofighter initiative is a collaborative endeavor among Britain, Germany, Italy, and Spain.

“The global landscape, particularly in the Middle East, has transformed dramatically since Oct. 7,” she noted, alluding to the date when the Palestinian militant organization Hamas launched an attack on Israel.
