Leonardo Launches Innovative M-346 Block 20 Enhancement Project!

During the Farnborough International Air Show, Leonardo has presented the launch of a comprehensive capability improvement package for the M-346 integrated training system, which incorporates crucial avionics, navigation/identification functionalities, mission apparatus, and ground training capabilities. This initiative corresponds with the imperative to modify pilot competencies to the shifts required by modern multi-domain combat scenarios, cutting-edge aerial warfare technologies, and information management systems.

This recent progression leverages the intrinsic growth potential integrated within the M-346 framework, alongside a decade of proven operational proficiency with leading air forces across the globe. It signifies a pivotal element of a broader organizational digital transformation strategy, completely congruent with Leonardo’s long-term vision. As a result, both training and combat variants will benefit from these enhancements, thus delivering improved options to the market across a varied spectrum of applications, while also enabling considerable opportunities for future developments. The new standards will be denoted as the ‘M-346 T Block 20’ and ‘M-346 F Block 20’.

The newly established Block 20 standard will not only enhance the platform itself but will also encompass the entire system, including the ground-based training framework, facilitated by a wide implementation of digital solutions supported by AI technology.

The cockpit of the Block 20 standard will feature two large area displays, one for each seat, replacing the existing six multifunction screens, along with a streamlined head-up display. These will be unified with a new digital video/data recorder and a sophisticated augmented reality helmet-mounted display. The redesigned cockpit will synchronize the human-machine interface with those utilized in state-of-the-art and next-generation frontline combat systems, delivering superior training quality (i.e. visual appeal along with a highly immersive setting) and improved situational awareness during operational activities. The ‘M-346 Block 20’ will also incorporate refined navigation, weapon management, flight management systems, and an IFF – Identification of Friend or Foe – transponder.

Specifically for the M-346 F variant, additional crucial capability enhancements encompass an AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar system with fire control functionalities, the integration of new munitions for both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, along with an integrated missile data link.

The comprehensive Ground-Based Training System (GBTS) approach to education (multi-media and classroom courses, flight/mission simulation, virtual and live/constructive training) will rise to the new standard through the inclusion of virtual reality assistance and AI applications.

Moreover, enhanced digitization will act as a pivotal enabler for improved technical support, propelled by the adoption of virtual maintenance and the “connected fleet,” an efficient framework utilizing Advanced Data Analytics and High-Performance Computing to strengthen Integrated Logistics Support services.

Lorenzo Mariani, Co-General Manager of Leonardo, commented: “Training is a foundational component of expertise at Leonardo, and the M-346 integrated training system functions as the cornerstone of our value proposition to ensure that fighter pilots are adequately prepared to tackle contemporary and intricate aerial challenges, both now and in the foreseeable future. As we actively participate in next-generation combat air advancements, this latest iteration of the M-346 highlights our dedication to embedding optimal training solutions in this venture. We firmly believe that the continuously evolving attributes of the type will keep delivering unmatched advantages for users within its market segment, both for training and operational/light fighter roles, establishing it as an ideal candidate for the future of pilot training in Europe and beyond.”

Marco Zoff, Leonardo Aircraft MD, stated: “Providing continuous enhancements for the M-346 has been integral to our brand for years, and we’re excited about today’s announcement showcasing how the M-346 is and will continue to be at the forefront of technology. We have made significant investments in a comprehensive digital transformation to deliver cutting-edge products and services. These improvements also reflect in the advanced capabilities that the M-346 will offer. We look forward to demonstrating the new features and potential of the Block 20 standard for both training and combat operations, as we work towards integrating the new solutions into this authentic training and operational ecosystem.”

With over 100 aircraft delivered to major global operators and exceeding 120,000 flight hours accumulated in service with customers, alongside the outstanding training capabilities offered by the International Flight Training School – IFTS in collaboration with the Italian Air Force, the M-346 has emerged as the most comprehensive training system for fighter pilots, adeptly addressing rising demands for cost-effective combat operations. The latest innovations enable its superior advantages and features to develop further for the benefit of current and prospective operators.
