Collins Aerospace Chosen by Northrop Grumman to Enhance ICBM Launch Capabilities

Northrop Grumman Corporation has chosen Collins Aerospace Systems, part of Raytheon Technologies Corp., to contribute to the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) program.

Collins Aerospace Systems is set to play an essential role in modernizing the U.S. intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) system through a contract awarded by primary contractor Northrop Grumman, aimed at supporting the U.S. Air Force’s Ground Based Strategic Deterrent initiative.

As a vital member of this national team, Collins Aerospace will lead the Secondary Launch Platform-Airborne (SLP-A) project. This project involves replacing the current Airborne Launch Control System, which integrates with the Minuteman III system that has operated for nearly 50 years.

“Northrop Grumman has assembled an outstanding team of industry partners to develop and deliver a thorough solution that enhances communication, command, and control capabilities for the GBSD,” says Heather Robertson, Vice President and General Manager at Collins Aerospace. “The SLP-A represents a comprehensive nuclear command-and-control solution designed to meet the demands of the modern battlespace.”

In September 2020, Northrop Grumman received a significant $13.3 billion contract for a fully qualified design of the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD), aimed at replacing the aging intercontinental ballistic missile system.
