Revolutionizing Surveillance: Leonardo-Finmeccanica Unveils Groundbreaking Flat-Panel Radar Technology

London, 3 May 2016

Leonardo-Finmeccanica has introduced Osprey, the newest member of the company’s electronically scanning (E-scan) radar collection. Built around a flat-panel antenna structure, Osprey is recognized as the world’s first lightweight airborne surveillance radar designed without any moving components. Leonardo-Finmeccanica has also declared that Norway will be the initial client for this radar, having acquired Osprey as part of its procurement of 16 Leonardo-Finmeccanica Helicopters AW101s for the NAWSARH program (Norway All Weather Search and Rescue Helicopter).

Osprey’s flat panel architecture allows for installation on a wide array of aircraft that were previously considered unable to house such radar systems, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In its configuration for NAWSARH, Osprey consists of three flat panels: one mounted on the front of the helicopter and two positioned at the rear, angled to establish a complete 360-degree field of view. This minimal spatial requirement ensures that the helicopter’s belly remains unobstructed, optimizing ground clearance for challenging rescue operations in rugged landscapes.

Furthermore, Osprey represents a significant advancement by providing a persistent 360-degree view within a lightweight design suitable for compact platforms. This radar exemplifies the forefront of ‘E-scan’ technology, leveraging electronic methods to swiftly direct the radar beam from target to target in mere fractions of a second. Due to the rapid adjustments in direction, the Osprey radar effectively offers simultaneous coverage across various angles.

Developed and produced in the UK at Leonardo-Finmeccanica’s Edinburgh facility, Osprey was brought to fruition through the company’s investment in radar technology and expertise. Osprey will be marketed alongside the company’s esteemed Seaspray family of E-Scan radars, which are currently operational with the Royal Navy and several international customers, including the United States Coast Guard.

· The Osprey E-Scan radar is the pioneering lightweight airborne surveillance radar to deliver a complete 360-degree field of view without moving components.

· This radar will be deployed in service with Norway, who have acquired Osprey for their new Leonardo-Finmeccanica AW101 search and rescue fleet.

· Developed through strategic investment in the UK by Leonardo-Finmeccanica, Osprey keeps the company five years ahead in radar technology.
