“Hanwha Systems and BAE Join Forces for Cutting-Edge Reconnaissance Satellite Initiative”

Hanwha Systems, a prominent South Korean defense and aerospace technology firm, declared today that it has finalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BAE Systems, the UK’s foremost defense and security enterprise, to collaboratively develop a sophisticated multi-sensor satellite system.

This partnership aims to amalgamate BAE Systems’ ultra-wideband Radio Frequency (RF) sensor technology with Hanwha Systems’ innovative small Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite capabilities. Together, the two firms will investigate the development of a robust space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance solution while enhancing their competitiveness in the international satellite marketplace.

The multi-sensor satellite system will merge data from both RF and SAR satellites and utilize machine learning to provide accurate, prompt, and high-resolution intelligence. By integrating various satellite data types, the system is anticipated to markedly improve situational awareness and offer a significant space-based surveillance resource.

Rachael Hoyle, Space Director at BAE Systems Digital Intelligence, stated: “Combining our expertise in space with Hanwha Systems’ proficiency in SAR satellites presents an exhilarating opportunity to advance ISR capabilities from space for global markets. We’re eager to cultivate this partnership and elevate space technologies collectively.”

Sung-Chan Song, Head of the Space Division at Hanwha Systems, remarked: “Compact SAR satellites are increasingly acknowledged as essential assets for surveillance and reconnaissance. Hanwha Systems is delighted to partner with BAE Systems as we aim to broaden our footprint in the global satellite industry.”

Hanwha Systems is the supplier of the SAR payload for the 425 Project, South Korea’s inaugural military reconnaissance satellite initiative. In December 2023, the enterprise successfully launched a 1-meter resolution small SAR satellite developed entirely with indigenous technology, showcasing its leadership in civilian-led Earth observation and surveillance capabilities. Hanwha is also engaging in Korea’s first low Earth orbit (LEO) communications satellite development endeavor, spearheaded by the Agency for Defense Development, and is actively contributing to the establishment of an autonomous military satellite constellation.
