Unveiling the Future: The First Upgraded CV90 of the Dutch Army Hits the Ground
The Royal Netherlands Army’s inaugural modernized CV90 infantry combat vehicle emerged from the factory today. This event took place in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, at the facility of BAE Systems Hägglunds. This is referred to as the ‘first of type’. Mass production, anticipated to commence by late 2023, will be founded upon this prototype. A total of 122 CV90s are set to undergo extensive modernization, known as a midlife upgrade (MLU).
The MLU is essential to maintain the vehicle’s operational relevance until its decommissioning in 2039. Recent years have witnessed a dramatic shift in the security landscape, with potential adversaries becoming considerably more formidable. This enhancement significantly elevates the capabilities of the armored infantry combat vehicle. Various evaluations will follow with this initial vehicle in the upcoming period to ensure that it fulfills all operational specifications. The initiative is slated for completion by the end of 2026.

Enhancements
The upgraded vehicles will feature increased firepower and enhanced protection for infantry against potential enemy anti-tank missiles. This is facilitated by an active protection system capable of intercepting incoming projectiles, covering a significant portion of the vehicles. Other key enhancements include the introduction of a new turret and a reconfiguration of the cannon’s positioning. This adjustment provides the crew with more room to maneuver and optimizes overall ergonomics. The IT systems are also receiving comprehensive upgrades, all of which boost combat effectiveness.
The modifications are well-received by the prospective crews of the vehicles: “This is unquestionably a major enhancement compared to the current CV90. It’s more user-friendly and offers us greater protection. There is ample space inside, and the cameras enable us to operate effectively in varied weather conditions. I am eager to work with this new equipment.”
